NSW: Ombudsman recommends police report publicly on complaints

SYDNEY, Aug 19 AAP - The NSW ombudsman today called on the police force to publiclyreport on police performance in managing complaints.

Ombudsman Bruce Barbour said some NSW police commanders were not performing well inthe area of managing complaints.

"Police commanders are improving in managing complaints, and the community can haveconfidence that most complaints against police are handled well," Mr Barbour said in astatement.

"Some local commanders, however, are not performing well.

"There remains room for improvement, and senior police need to ensure that recent gainsare not lost."

Mr Barbour urged the police to report publicly on performance in managing complaints.

"Because NSW police is responsible for dealing with most of the complaints againstpolice officers, it should report to the community about how well it is managing thosecomplaints," Mr Barbour said.

The ombudsman urged police to develop standards for police investigations and to holdcommanders to account for meeting these benchmarks.
