Vic: Triple fatality near Yea adds to holiday road toll

MELBOURNE, Dec 27 AAP - Three people were killed in a fiery two-car smash near Yea,north-east of Melbourne this afternoon.
The deaths brought the Victorian holiday road toll to 10.
A 50-year-old woman was also killed today when the car she was driving hit a tree atPakenham, in outer south-eastern Melbourne, just before 1pm (AEDT).
Four others travelling in the car were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police said the triple fatality occurred on a straight stretch of the Melba Highway,four kilometres south of Yea, about 4pm (AEDT), killing the female driver of a utilityand two others in a sedan.
The vehicles are believed to have collided head-on.
Paramedic Mark Brurere (Brurere) said the sedan burst into flames, with the fire spreadingto grass along the roadside when the ambulance arrived.
"One patient was on fire and another had massive injuries," Mr Brurere said.
"A third person was thrown from the vehicle onto the side of the road."
Mr Brurere said paramedics tried to revive the man on the roadside but he died a shorttime later at the Yea Hospital.
Mr Brurere said major accidents had an impact on nearly everyone in small towns like Yea.
"We get these tragedies occasionally and it affects everyone," he said.
"The local police were on scene, CFA volunteers, the nurses and doctors at the localhospital who tried to revive the man.
"When something like this happens on the outskirts of town, it affects everyone."
Traffic was blocked for several hours in both directions.
The accidents take Victoria's road toll to 389 for the year, compared with 441 forthe same time last year.
